Smart Optics: a
new technology platform for the dynamic directing and shaping of light December
19th, 14h, iGent |
|||
Lighting has recently
evolved from a commodity product where innovation concentrated mainly on
efficient illumination, to a lifestyle product class that acknowledges the
diverse and profound effects it can have on general wellbeing, efficiency in
the workplace, city atmosphere, health, architecture etc. This increased
attention to the quality of light brings along increasing demands on the
ability to control it, be it artificial light or sunlight that enters
buildings via shafts etc. It also asks for dynamic solutions that allow a
single source of light to serve different use cases, for instance to adapt to
a change in interior, switch from direct to indirect lighting etc. Other applications
that require the ability to steer light are for instance 3D-displays that can
work without the need to wear special glasses. These challenges were
tackled within the research project SECONDOS: Smart Electro-Optical
Components for the direction of Solid State Light, involving B-Phot (VUB), the Centre for Microsystems Technology (UGent,
imec) ETAP N.V. and the Liquid Crystals and Photonics group of
UGent. This seminar will present the main results from this project and offer
an outlook to possible next steps towards products. This research was
subsidized by VLAIO. |
